The Ayahs Story: Piece me together or my story’s lost forever

Thursday 29 July 2021, 6.30pm to 7.30pm, Online

Award winning author Sita Brahmachari and renowned community activist Farhanah Mamoojee explore their passion for uncovering the untold stories of Ayahs and Amahs (colonial female care-givers) who travelled to the UK from all over the Empire in the 19th century.

The former site of The Ayahs' Home still exists today, and it is here that Sita’s magical novel is set, as a younger generation discovers the story of the ayahs and brings them to light. The same building is currently awaiting a Blue Plaque thanks to Farhanah's campaign.

Unbeknown to each other, Sita and Farhanah met at an event put together by Farhanah at Hackney Museum in March 2020, which highlighted this hidden piece of British history. The event and campaign for the former site continue to receive national and international coverage.

In this talk, Sita and Farhanah will delve into the many threads that connect their discoveries about these women through oral history, art and archives, and explore where fact and fiction meet to consider how the story of the Ayahs is still relevant today.

The story that unfolds will have you wondering what hidden histories lay unrevealed, waiting to be discovered in your own street. Book now
