Brent is the most diverse borough in the country and has the seventh highest black community in London by numbers. The Black community continue to be affected by inequalities and systematic racism. The tragic killing of George Floyd in the US brought this into sharp focus and sparked protests around the world. The Covid-19 pandemic has also had a disproportionate impact on Black and Asian communities in terms of the number of cases of the virus and mortality rates.
To address the inequalities that our black communities continue to face, we agreed the Brent Black Community Action Plan in July 2020.
The plan, which the local community helped us to create, will among other things, build sustainable communities, with Black leaders playing a role in decision-making, develop community spaces that members of the community will run and manage and conduct an internal review of processes in the council.
