Government confirms “Freedom Day”: what is changing?

On Monday the Government confirmed that England will move to Step 4 of the roadmap on 19 July. This means that most COVID-19 legal restrictions will be lifted and it will be up to individuals to assess the risks and act accordingly.

The Government has stressed that, while COVID-19 cases remain high, everybody needs to continue to act carefully and remain cautious. For example, people will be advised to continue to wear face coverings in crowded indoor areas and it has been confirmed that masks will remain compulsory on London’s public transport.

Brent’s Public Health Director, Dr Melanie Smith, said: “Cases are rising in Brent so while the law is changing we are urging caution and encouraging everyone to get fully vaccinated. The vaccine is safe and two jabs gives you the best protection against becoming seriously ill with COVID-19. More than 68% of adults in the UK have received their first dose.”

Residents can book their first or second jab at on the NHS website or pop in to a local vaccine pop-up – find upcoming pop-ups on Eventbrite.

Those who test positive for coronavirus will still have to self-isolate, as will those who been in close contact with someone who does.

What is changing?

From 19 July, the following legal requirements will be removed:

  • Requirement to wear a face covering in shops, on public transport and other enclosed spaces.
  • Requirement to work from home wherever possible.
  • Requirement to follow social distancing (2 metres).
  • Requirements limiting the number of people allowed to socialise indoors and outdoors.
  • Limits on mass sporting events.
  • Closure of nightclubs and bars.

Updated guidance for businesses as the country moves to Step 4 is expected to be made available on the Government website soon.

Visitors to Brent public buildings, including the Civic Centre, libraries and the museum, will be asked to continue wear face coverings unless exempt.
