Social care superheroes who dedicate their lives to helping people in need were celebrated on Wednesday (3 August) at the first Adult Social Care Awards.

The ceremony, hosted by comedian and entertainer Mr Cee, brought together inspirational keyworkers from the council and care homes across the borough in a special event held at Brent Civic Centre.

Guests included the Mayor of Brent, Councillor Abdi Aden, and Deborah Sturdy, Chief Nurse for the Department for Health and Social Care who gave the keynote speech.

Deborah praised the hard work and commitment of all the nominees, acknowledging the challenges they face, whilst recognising the real difference that care and keyworkers make to people’s everyday lives.

Councillor Neil Nerva, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Adult Social care, said:

“These brilliant keyworkers are the backbone of our society and our borough. Without them, hundreds would not get the vital social care support that they depend on, so it was wonderful to recognise their outstanding achievements.

“

Brent is a special borough, with care and kindness at its core, and every single nominee is an example of this.

Guests were treated to incredible performances by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the St Michael and All Angels Steel Orchestra and singer, Natasha Carver.

Celebrity guest Shaun Wallace from ITV’s ‘The Chase,’ who grew up in Brent, also attended and spoke about his own experiences caring for both of his parents.

A special mention should be given to Elisabeta Mzhika who won the award for Significant Extra Care to Residents. Elisabeta works at Coplands’s Nursing Home, delivering an essential service and developing her team to ensure resident care has been second to none.

The awards also recognised the inspirational work of unpaid carers. Both Valarie Tyksinski and Kawal Singh won the award for providing amazing care to family members during difficult times.

The Team Award was won by Kenbrook Care Home, for their dedication and commitment they have shown caring for their residents as a team.

Thank you to our sponsors at St Luke’s Hospice (Kenton) and the Victoria Care Centre for helping to ensure the evening was a roaring success.
