Veolia’s sustainability fund helps projects come to life with cash donations and volunteers innovative project ideas in Brent that are sustainable.

The fund supports not-for-profit organisations, community groups or individuals that enhance biodiversity, promote sustainable waste behaviours, protect and preserve resources and the environment, or use recycled, reused or reclaimed materials.

In 2021, Veolia’s Sustainability Fund received over 100 applications and awarded £27,000 worth of funding to 46 grassroot projects up and down the country, as well as in-kind resources and volunteers.

One of the projects Veolia supported in Brent was the St Gabriel’s Eco-Grounds Project. The community group was able to turn underused areas into blooming sources of biodiversity - an insect hotel to enrich bee populations; a hedging to support local wildlife and a community allotment for residents to grow their own food.

Marcus Liberman, St Gabriel’s Eco-Grounds Founder, said:“ The Sustainability Fund has enabled us to buy a bee hive which we now have made and it will also enable us to buy the bees to go in it. We’ve also used some of the funding to create raised beds and when we’re ready to plant our wildflower meadow, we will also buy some seeds to plant wildflowers there as well.”

“

It was so inspiring meeting the pastor at St Gabriel’s and some of the fantastic volunteers. Projects like this mean that we have a chance in tackling climate change, by encouraging wildlife to flourish and keeping things local

"Marcus also let me know about the positive impacts this project had on local volunteers' mental health who looked after the garden, as well as the food that was created to help feed those in the community who needed it most."

“Applications are now open for the Sustainability Fund, so if you have an idea or are a part of a local group, I would urge you to apply.”

Projects can apply for funding on the Veolia website. Application deadline is Friday, 4 November 2022.
