In 2021, we temporarily removed bollards lining the cycle lane on Harrow Road. This was to carry out cleaning and essential maintenance.
We have taken the opportunity to consult further on how this temporary cycle lane can be improved and responses are being considered.
Alongside this, we are continuing to work with Transport for London on developing plans for a permanent Healthy Streets Corridor scheme between Wembley and Willesden in the future. This includes the provision of a high quality cycle lane, as well as wider public realm improvements which support walking and road safety.
We also removed an old byelaw, which used to prohibit cycling in Brent’s parks, opening up these spaces to bicycles.
A temporary cycle route was created along A404 Harrow Road (from Wembley Triangle to A406 North Circular Road).
Brent Council is committed to encouraging active travel, and Harrow Road is an important part of the permanent Wembley to Willesden Healthy Streets Corridor scheme, which the Council had been considering before the pandemic.
We have had to alter our immediate approach due to the changing circumstances and it is now proposed to progress a two-staged approach:
- Introduce a shorter temporary scheme on Harrow Road;
- Continue to develop a longer term permanent scheme, subject to funding availability which will be informed through engaging with stakeholders and learning from the temporary scheme.
The temporary cycle route will use a combination of existing bus lanes and temporary materials such as flexible posts to create a continuous route for cyclists along part of the A404 Harrow Road. The scheme will improve safety and amenity for cyclists and provide a strong visual indicator of the separation of road space. Subject to funding, this route will be extended south of the A406 towards Harlesden later in the year.
