How is housing benefit paid
There are three types of people that we pay housing benefit to:
Your housing benefit will be paid directly to your rent account. Even if you are receiving the maximum amount of housing benefit, you will usually have to pay a service charge yourself. Housing association tenants
Your housing benefit will be paid directly to your housing association. We will write to them at the same time you are notified to let them know how much benefit you are going to receive. If you want to know how much you have to pay after your housing benefit has been paid, you should contact the housing association directly.
Housing benefit is paid every 4 weeks in arrears.
We usually pay the housing benefit directly to the tenant. However, in some cases we can pay the money directly to the landlord.
If we do pay the benefit directly to the landlord we will write to them at the same time you are notified, to let them know how much benefit you are going to receive. If you want to know how much you have to pay after your housing benefit has been paid, you should contact the landlord directly.
Housing benefit is paid either every two weeks in arrears, or every four weeks in arrears. How you are paid will be on your notification letter.
Help with understanding your benefit notice letter
After a decision has been made on your benefit award regarding how much you are entitled to, you will be given a detailed notification letter.
Where possible, you will be given the letter by the officer you see when your benefit is being decided, although on occasion the letter will be sent to you through the post.

Housing benefit for rent to a private landlord is paid directly into your bank account via BACS. These payments are every four weeks or every two weeks - depending on the frequency you requested when you made your claim.
The payment dates for this financial year are listed below. These are the dates the payments should be in your bank account but it can take up to five working days to reach your account.
If you do not receive your payment as scheduled, you will have received a letter from us requesting further information. In order to receive further payments please ring the number provided on the letter.
