Emergency and crisis care service for children and young people

A 24-hour urgent care team is available at Northwick Park Hospital providing rapid response, prompt assessment and, where appropriate, intensive time- limited interventions for children and young people up to the age of 18 who are experiencing an acute mental health or emotional crisis.

Reasons for urgent referral include:

  • Following an overdose
  • Following an incident of deliberate or threat of self- harm
  • Acute anxiety
  • A dramatic and unexplained change in mood or behaviour

The service means that children and young people in Brent have access to dedicated crisis and liaison support and are seen by a CAMHS clinician at first point of contact, 24 hours a day. Referral is via presentation at Northwick Park Hospital’s accident and emergency department (A&E) Families can also contact their local CAMHS team (Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm) prior to attending A&E for advice and guidance.

When safe to do so, the team will then transfer the child/young person on to their local CAMHS team for follow-up care and treatment, or to their GP or other local service that meets their needs.
