Work and Health Programme

What is the Work and Health Programme?

The Work and Health Programme is a government funded employment programme, that started in January 2018. 

As well as providing personal support to build up skills and experience and prepare participants for and find work, the programme also provides health and well-being support to address wider issues and challenges that might be preventing participants from working (e.g. physical and mental health, family and personal responsibilities, lifestyle, housing, money, rewarding volunteering opportunities).

Shaw Trust has won the contract to run the Work and Health Programme for the West London Alliance, including Brent (    


Who it is for/Eligibility criteria?

You could be eligible if you live in England or Wales and you are:

  • disabled (people are defined as disabled under the 2010 Equality Act You’re disabled under the Equality Act 2010 if they have a physical or mental impairment that has a ‘substantial’ and ‘long-term’ negative effect on their ability to do normal daily activities).
  • out of work and have claimed unemployment benefits for 24 months
  • a carer or former carer
  • homeless
  • a former member of the armed forces or an armed forces reservist
  • the partner of a current or former member of the armed forces
  • a care leaver
  • a young person in a gang
  • a refugee
  • a victim of domestic violence
  • dependent (or have been dependent) on drugs or alcohol and it’s preventing you from getting work
  • an ex-offender and you’ve completed a custodial or community sentence
  • an offender serving a community sentence

You don’t have to be getting benefits to apply.

Who can refer?

People are referred on to the Work and Health Programme by their work coaches at Job Centre Plus.  You can also be referred via your Local Authority Support Worker.

How to refer (can we include single point of contact details?)

Ask your work coach if you are eligible.

If you don’t have a work coach, go to your local Jobcentre Plus and ask to speak to a work coach about the Work and Health Programme.
