Gritting

During the winter we monitor road conditions and weather forecasts around the clock. We have a unique forecast for Brent that is updated at least twice a day.  This gives the forecast for the next 24 hours and another for the next five days.

Our aim is to treat the main roads and other important routes before the ice or snow comes.

The placing of rock salt on the road lowers the freezing temperature of water, slows ice formation, and can help to melt snow. However the snow needs to be mixed with the grit for it to work. This is done by the traffic movement along the roads. Most of Brent’s salting of roads is carried out at night.

Salt is not effective at road surface temperatures below minus seven degrees.
