You Decide is a programme based on a method called Participatory Budgeting, that enables local people to make decisions on public sector budgets. You, the community, can submit ideas and decide which projects are funded.
Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a proven method of enabling local people to come together and decide on the allocation of money to benefit the community.
Brent Council is trialling PB under the You Decide banner with two different pots of money: Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy (NCIL) and Carbon Offset fund.
Although each programme is different, PB usually follows these steps:
- Criteria for spending the pot of money is set.
- Ideas and proposals are submitted by eligible local groups, organisations, businesses or individuals (depending on the criteria) via an applications process.
- The community gets together on ‘Decision Day’ to vote on which projects are funded.
