What is the census?
The census is a survey that happens every 10 years and provides a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales. The census is unique. No other survey gives as much detail about us and the society we live in.
All kinds of organisations, from local authorities to charities, use the information to help provide the services we all need, including transport, education and healthcare. Without the census, it would be much more difficult to do this.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) runs the census in England and Wales, and the next one will happen on Sunday 21 March 2021.
The ONS holds the information and it is kept secure for 100 years.

You still have time to complete your Census questionnaire
Nine out of ten households across England and Wales have completed their questionnaire – but everyone must take part. Every household is required by law to complete the census. Even though Census Day – 21 March 2021 – has been and gone, it is not too late to fill out your form and avoid a fine.
All households were sent a letter in the post in early March with instructions for taking part. If you have lost the letter or have a second address - including a caravan - you have not visited, go to www.census.gov.uk to request an online completion code for your address via SMS text message.
If you know someone who doesn't have the skills or confidence to do the census online, help is at hand. We have four census support centres in Brent, offering phone and face to face and language support. Go to https://census.gov.uk/help/find-a-census-support-centre to find a centre near you.
You can also call our Freephone contact centre. Call 0800 141 2021 for help or to order a paper questionnaire. Alternatively you can call 07452934420 for help.
Field officers will help and encourage those who have not yet filled in their census questionnaire online or on paper and direct them to the support services they need.
- Field staff will never need to enter people’s houses;
- They will always be socially distanced, be equipped with PPE and work in line with all government guidance.
- They will be operating in the same way as a postal or food delivery visit.
- They also carry ID to show they are genuinely working on the census
How will taking part in the census benefit me?
Census 2021 will help give the best picture of the needs of everyone living in England and Wales.
A total of 94% of people took part in the last census, helping each area receive its share of public funding. By taking part, you’ll be helping make sure you and your community get the services you need now and in the future.
You must complete the census by law. If you do not, or if you supply false information, you could be fined up to £1,000.
What to expect?
Census 2021 will be the first digital-first census. It’s easy to do and can be done on any device.
Once you receive an access code from the ONS, you should go online and enter the code into the ONS secure website to get started.
