Changes to British Citizenship applications

Under the heading of ‘good character’ if you have had any unauthorised stay in the UK, even outside of the qualifying period for naturalisation, this will be taken in to consideration and it could result in a refusal of the application.

For example:

  • if you have had no leave to enter or remain in the UK
  • if you have absconded (not complied with temporary admission while reporting to the Home Office), working while not legally entitled to.
  • if you have had a history of non-compliance with immigration requirements this will factor in the Home Office decision.

The Home Office caseworker may refuse for a period of 10 years following the nationality application before British citizenship can be applied for again.

Current cases are been held in the Home Office while further instruction on how to proceed with these cases based on the new policy change will be implemented.

If you have already submitted an application this could be why there is a delay.

Officers booking nationality appointments will now ask you about your full stay within the UK as this could effect you ability to apply.
