Studied: Sociology & Politics
My name is Maddy and my first placement was in Public Health, where I developed a new strategy to address childhood obesity. Childhood obesity is a major health issue in Brent, and one that is closely related to inequality and deprivation, so it was a really rewarding project to work on. As part of my placement I organised a health conference for school teachers. Taking responsibility for this event this was a great opportunity for me to develop leadership skills; something that can be harder to find with other graduate-level jobs.
I chose Brent because it’s a forward thinking, innovative local authority with its residents at the heart of its work. Brent is really committed to the NGDP and works hard to make sure Graduates have a great range of placements and other development opportunities whilst they’re here. I also like that Brent tends to have large cohorts of Graduates, as it means you have a large support network whilst you’re here. The Civic Centre also makes for a pretty amazing office!
The best thing about the NGDP scheme is definitely the range of opportunities it offers you. Having four different placements across the two years is a really good way of working out exactly where your strengths and interests are, and helping you plan the next steps in your career.
