Whilst on the graduate scheme I had the opportunity to work across a number of areas in the council, including placements in the Leader of the Council’s Office, Adult’s Social Care and the Corporate Transformation Team. I particularly enjoyed working on the Council’s wholly owned company i4B, as this was a new experience of working in a commercially minded way to deliver better housing outcomes for Brent residents.

At the end of the two years of the graduate scheme I was pleased to secure a permanent position in the Corporate Transformation Team as a Senior Transformation Officer, which has given me the opportunity to work on a number of exciting change projects across the council.

I chose to work for Brent Council because of its innovative approach to addressing the challenges affecting local government in the current climate of diminishing budgets and ever increasing demand for services. The council has a number of ongoing interesting and innovative projects such as the development of the Community Hub Model and the creation of its wholly owned company, i4B Holdings Limited. Brent Council is ambitious and embraces the opportunities provided by digital progression in its aim to become a digital borough. Whilst at Brent I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with residents, partners, and communities to work creatively to co-design future service provision.

The NGDP gives you the invaluable opportunity to work across a variety of departments and projects. This has given me a greater insight into the challenges and issues in local government and public service delivery more widely. As this is a national scheme, I have made connections with a number of colleagues who work in local government across the country who are a great source of knowledge and support, and have contributed to be so beyond the life of the two year programme.

The NGDP provides a number of learning and development opportunities through the regular residential courses, action learning sets, mentoring and more. Once the scheme finishes, the learning and development opportunities continue and I regularly get invited to attend alumni events.
