Studied Politics and International Relations
My name is Katie and I am currently in my third placement on the National Graduate Development Programme at Brent Council. I have had the opportunity to work in Adult Social Care, Regeneration and, currently, in the Inclusion service within Children and Young People. The NGDP allows you to experience a variety of placements across the authority and get a real understanding into Local Government. Within all of my placements thus far I have been lucky enough to work directly with either residents, local community organisations or local schools which has allowed me to see the impact of the work that I am doing. Particularly in Regeneration and Children and Young People, I have been given responsibility to lead on pieces of work and report back to Head of Service and Operational Directors.
I studied Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham and have always wanted to work in the Public Sector however it was not until after my degree finished that I found out about the NGDP. I chose to work at Brent Council as it is a very forward thinking local authority that puts the local residents at the heart of what it does. I would strongly recommend any graduate that has an interest in politics or local communities to apply for the NGDP, not only do you get to develop your knowledge and skill set but you are able to see the impact of the work that you do.
