Studied: Politics, Psychology and Sociology
My name is Miriam, and I am on the NGDP scheme, based in Brent Council. I currently work within the Chief Executive’s Department, in the Transformation Team. I studied Politics, Psychology and Sociology for my undergraduate degree, and then pursued a Masters in Multidisciplinary Gender Studies.
I chose the NGDP because I wanted to make a tangible difference – the great thing about working in Local Government is that you can see the results of your work within the borough, especially if you live there as well (which I do!). I also wanted to be able to use the skills I developed during academic study, whilst also learning new skills and exploring areas which I do not have a background in.
My first placement has allowed me to do both of these. Part of my role is to develop a performance monitoring framework for I4B, a Council-owned private company which is buying properties to house residents which the Council owes a homelessness duty towards. This is an area I have never worked in before, and it is incredibly exciting to have responsibility for monitoring a multi-million pound company! I am also assisting on a review of Council-commissioned Domestic Abuse services, with the aim of improving Domestic Abuse provision and making support easier to find and access. This has allowed me to use previous knowledge, whilst also requiring me to learn about the commissioning process and the specific services offered in Brent.
I see the NGDP developing me by providing me with a wide skillset, exposing me to frontline, strategic, and operational roles in order to prepare me for a management role. I am enjoying my experience so far and am excited to find out where my next placement will take me!
