You must tell us if your circumstances change. Even the smallest of changes can affect the amount of Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support you get.
If you do not tell us about a change that affects your entitlement and we give you too much Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support, then you may have to pay back some, or all, of the money that you have had.
Changes you need to report to us
You must let us know if something changes for you, your partner or those living with you.
Rent or address
- A change in rent
- if you move to another address within Brent or move out of the borough
Household
- If you and/or your partner becomes a student
- Marital status: married, divorced or separated from your husband, wife, partner or co-habitant.
- Addition to the household, such as a new born baby.
- Children's education, such as if they leave school or start university and stop receiving child benefit.
- A non-dependant e.g. grown-up children, an adult relative, a partner, or child moves in or out.
- A non-dependant starts or stops getting a state benefit.
Income
- You or your partner start to receive a state benefit.
- Benefits you or your partner receive change or stop.
- You or anyone living with you starts working or changes jobs.
- You or anyone living with you has a change in wages or savings.
- Someone starts or stops receiving Carer's Allowance, or the Carer's Element in Universal Credit, for looking after you.
Temporary absence
- If you will be away from your property for a length of time, please tell us before you leave.
- Your Housing Benefit can continue while you are away from your home, providing that you return within:
- 4 weeks if you leave Great Britain
- 8 weeks if you have a bereavement of a close relative (A 'close relative' is defined as a mother, father, sister, brother, daughter or son).
If you don’t report a change that affects your entitlement and you’re overpaid Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support, you may be required to repay some or all of the overpaid amount.
