To help keep our streets clean and safe, we’ve introduced timed rubbish and recycling collections in selected areas. These rules apply to both household and business waste on specific roads.
What are timed collections
A timed collection means you can put out your rubbish and recycling every day, but only:
- during specific time windows (6pm to 6.30am)
- at designated collection points
This helps prevent bags being left out all day, keeping pavements clear and streets cleaner.
Following a successful trial in Harlesden, there is now only one longer window when residents and businesses can put their rubbish and recycling out:
- You should only place your rubbish and recycling outside between 6pm and 6.30am.
- You must not put out any waste between 6.30am and 6pm. This is strictly prohibited in this area, and you may be fined if caught doing so.
Any waste left out at the wrong times or in the wrong place may not be collected and could result in a fine.
What happens if you don't follow the rules
If you put rubbish or recycling out at the wrong time or in the wrong place, you may receive a fine under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
Our Enforcement Team monitor these areas regularly. If a fine is issued and remains unpaid, legal action may follow.
How to avoid a fine
It’s easy to stay compliant by following these rules:
- put your rubbish and recycling out at the correct time: this is between 6.00pm – 6.30am
- leave it at the correct location on your street, as shown by signage
- use appropriate waste or recycling bags (you can collect additional recycling bags from your local library or order them online)
- securely bundle cardboard
- make sure bags are sealed and do not leak or spill
- for bulky items, book a special collection or take them to a local reuse and recycling centre.
Guidance for businesses
If you run a business in a timed collection location, the same rules apply.
Businesses in a timed collection area must:
- use a licensed waste provider
- put rubbish in branded commercial waste bags or bins (never plain bags)
- put your waste out at the correct time: this is between 6.00pm – 6.30am
- seal bags and bundle cardboard securely
- follow signage or consult your provider for details.
If your waste is collected from inside your premises, timed rules do not apply.
