All cooling towers and evaporative condensers are legally required to be registered with us.
Why we register cooling towers
It has been found that poor maintenance of wet cooling systems (cooling towers and evaporative condensers), could lead to outbreaks of legionnaires' disease.
Regulations were made in 1992 requiring cooling towers and evaporative condensers to be registered with the local authority.
The regulations require those in control of premises with wet cooling systems to not only register them with us but to also notify changes, including when a plant closes.
The purpose for this notification process is to identify where potential sources of risk are located and allow for easier identification, monitoring and inspection by the enforcing authorities.
Operators of installations should be aware that both the local authority and government agencies responsible will undertake a number of visits to their premises to ensure standards are met and will take enforcement action where appropriate.
You can email us, if you would like to register a cooling tower.
