The London Borough of Brent aims to supply heat to over 30 buildings, including ~2,600 dwellings, two schools and multiple commercial buildings in South Kilburn through a district heat network.
A district heat network supplies heat by circulating hot water from an energy centre to buildings through 2.7km of a distributing buried pipe network under roads and pavements. Heat will be generated by Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) located on the roof of Puffin House, Unity Place and on the roof of a block that will be redeveloped on the Hereford and Exeter site. These ASHPs will be opposite roofs on the corner of Cambridge Road and Carlton Vale. ASHPs will generate low carbon and affordable heat to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
This is a more efficient way of generating and distributing heat.
The heat generating plant and distributing network up to the heat exchangers in each building connected will be fully owned by Brent Council.
Current timescales
The Council is in the process of an open procurement to appoint the main contractor to design, build over several phases, then operate and maintain for a period of fifteen years the ‘South Kilburn District Heat Network’ (SK DHN). The South Kilburn District Heat Network main contractor’s scope does not include designing, building, then operating or maintaining the heating system within your building or flat.
Your building managers will be responsible for operating and maintaining your heating system within your building and flat. Residents will pay for their flat’s heat and hot water metered consumption to their building managers or who is acting for their building managers.
