The story of Staples Corner dates back to the early 19th century when it served as a vital intersection for trade routes and coaching inns.
Originally named after the Staples Mattress factory, which was at the road junction from 1926 to 1986, the area began to flourish with the expansion of the railway network and the rise of the industrial revolution. Its strategic location between London and the Midlands made it a crucial hub for transportation and commerce.

With the advent of the railway system and the rise of the Industrial Revolution, Staples Corner underwent a significant transformation.
As the 20th century dawned, Staples Corner experienced rapid urbanisation and industrialisation. Warehouses, factories, and mills sprouted up, attracting businesses from various sectors.
The area became known for its thriving manufacturing and distribution industries, fuelling London’s economic growth and providing employment opportunities for the local population. The once-quaint crossroads transformed into a bustling commercial hub.
The Welsh Harp or Brent Reservoir originated as a canal feeder of 1810. In 1833 Regent's Canal Company decided to build the reservoir, which opened in 1838. Before this the area had been grazing land either side of Silk Stream and River Brent.
Welsh Harp/Brent Reservoir has historic significance as open recreational and leisure spaces and was completed in 1835 to feed the Regent’s and Grand Union canals.
After construction of the Welsh Harp Tavern, the Welsh Harp/Brent Reservoir became a destination for leisure, recreation and entertainment. Water sports, cycling and ice sports brought many people into the area as competitors and spectators, and more recreational activities such as greyhound racing and horse racing, alongside summer fêtes.

18th Century: Edgware Road is a Roman Road know as Watling Street, along with the river Brent, was the first manmade feature of this landscape. The River Brent’s natural course used to meander along the northern edge of the Staples Corner area.

The construction of the North Circular Road and the M1 motorway revolutionised transportation in the area, making it a vital intersection for commuters and cargo alike. Notable landmarks such as the Staples Corner Flyover, a remarkable feat of engineering, became iconic symbols of the neighbourhood.
In 1921 part of the reservoir north-east of the Edgware Road was reclaimed and the River Brent and the Silk Stream culverted and in 1926 the North Circular Road opened, crossing the Edgware Road at Brent Bridge.
