High Road improvements
We undertook a revitalisation of Wembley High Road between 2021 and 2023 to help create a more vibrant, attractive and inclusive place for people to spend time.
This included a range of improvements, from aesthetic and environmental changes to new youth facilities, public artwork and projects to bring people together and celebrate culture.
High streets have been hit hard by changing shopping habits and the impact of COVID-19. With more people now spending time in their local neighbourhoods, this work aims to help Wembley High Road adapt and thrive for the future.
What has changed?
- Footway improvements: The footways were re-paved using high-quality block paving and new granite kerbs. The new robust paving was laid in two contrasting colours (light grey and cream) which has significantly improve the look, feel and attractiveness of the High Road. Along some sections of the road the pavement was widened by about a metre and unwanted barriers, signs and posts were removed to provide more space for shoppers.
- Tree planting: New trees were planted to help improve air quality and boost biodiversity. Trees also provide shade and have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing. It was necessary to remove some existing unhealthy trees on instruction from our specialist tree officer, which have been replaced with new trees.
- Street lighting: The existing streetlights were replaced with modern lampposts. Uplighters were installed around all the trees, to help create a safe and welcoming environment. The new lampposts provide excellent lighting for both the footways and roads.
- Bus stops, cycle parking and other street furniture: New cycle parking and more accessible bus stops were provided to enable and encourage sustainable transport. New seating and litter bins were also introduced.
- Road resurfacing: The road was resurfaced from Wembley Triangle to Napier Road and anti-skid surfacing provided at pedestrian crossings.
Additionally, we have also rolled out new public art, installed a new mural to celebrate the local community, and made improvements and makeovers to shopfronts.
