Register for Council Tax or tell us you are moving

If you are moving into Brent, or liable to pay Council Tax for the first time, you need to register to set up an account. 

You need to tell us:

• your current address, including postcode
• the address in Brent that you are moving to
• the date you are moving in
• your bank details to set up a Direct Debit
• the full names of everyone aged over 16 living in the property

If you are renting we need:

• the date your tenancy starts
• the landlord or managing agents details
• the details of any joint tenants you are living with

If you are a homeowner need:

• the completion date on the sale
• joint owner’s details if you are a joint homeowner 
• solicitor details (if you have purchased the property)

Tell us online

Use My Account to tell us you are moving. You tell us if you're already at your new address, or your moving in date is less than 28 days from today.

It only takes a couple of minutes to set up. All you need to get started is an email address to use as a log in.

Problems finding an address

If your address can’t be found it could be because:

• our records may have the address named in another way. For example, First Floor Flat instead of Flat 1
• your property has been built recently and may not be on our system yet
• we have already been notified by the previous owner/landlord that you are moving into the property.

If you can't find your address or you have problems setting up or accessing your account, please call 020 8937 1800 and select option 3 to speak to one of our advisors. Our lines are open between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

What happens next

Once you have told us you are moving into Brent, we will send your first Council Tax bill to you within 10 working days.

When you have your bill, you can use your Council Tax number to activate your online Council Tax account. Then you can:

• view details of your account
• change to ebilling 
• set up a Direct Debit
• change your Direct Debit bank account details
• apply for a single person discount or an empty (and unfurnished) property exemption
• apply for refunds.

You can also:

• apply for Council Tax reduction
• tell us about a change of circumstance that affects your Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support.

You need to tell if you are moving so we can update your Council Tax account.

You will need to tell us:

• the address in Brent that you are moving to
• your moving dates
• the full names of everyone aged over 16 living with you.

If you are renting we need:

• the date your old tenancy ends and/or the new one starts
• the landlord or managing agents details
• joint tenant details if you are a joint tenant

If you are a homeowner need:

• the completion statement
• joint owner’s details if you are a joint homeowner 
• solicitor details (if you have purchased the property)

Tell us online

Use My Account to tell us you are moving, if you're already at your new address, or your moving in date is less than 28 days from today.

If you are paying Council Tax at your current address but have not activated your Council Tax account number on My Account, you need to do this up before you tell us you are moving. Select ‘activate Council Tax account' before you start completing the ‘Moving home’ form.

What happens next

Once you have told us you are moving out of Brent, we will close your account and send you a final bill for anything your still owe.  If you have a credit on your account, we will transfer this to your new account or refund it to you.

If you are moving out of the area, then you will need to let us know so we can update and close your Council Tax account.

You need to tell us:

• your current address, including postcode
• a forwarding address (so we can send you a final bill)
• the date you are moving out
• the full names of everyone aged over 16 living in the property

If you are renting we need:

• the date your tenancy ends
• the landlord or managing agents details

If you are a homeowner need:

• the completion date on the sale of your property
• the names or the new owners (if known)

Use My Account to tell us you are moving, if you're already at your new address, or your moving in date is less than 28 days from today.

If you are paying Council Tax at your current address but have not activated your Council Tax account number on My Account, you need to do this up before you tell us you are moving. Select ‘activate Council Tax account' before you start completing the ‘Moving home’ form.

What happens next

Once you have told us you are moving out of Brent, we will close your account and send you a final bill for anything your still owe.  If you have a credit on your account, we will refund this to you, if you are not paying by direct Debit we will need your bank details and new address before we can do this.
