The SS Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury docks on 22 June 1948 carrying passengers from the Caribbean. They were invited by Britain to assist with post-war reconstruction. Many of this generation resided in Brent, becoming part of the fabric of the borough with a lasting legacy of reggae and carnival arts.
To mark the 70th anniversary of the Empire Windrush this exhibition explores Brent’s Caribbean heritage with portrait photographs. You can also see collections from Brent Museum and Archives, bespoke artworks commissioned especially by Mahogany Arts, quotes from renowned poet Malika Booker and experience a traditional West Indian ‘front room’ with our installation highlighting items from the local community.
There have been a wide number of events throughout this exhibition. This includes a Caribbean comedy night, badge making for families, a Windrush 70 anniversary event featuring live music, dance and songs and award winning poet Hannah Lowe discussing Caribbean immigration and what it means to be British.
