Contemporary Quilt London was set up four years ago by a group of London based artists who wished to make textile art works and quilts. They aimed to offer members the opportunity to develop and improve their practice as well as the chance to exhibit their work to a wider audience. Each artist has their own individual style but all members share a common passion for textiles.
This is the second exhibition that the group have held and the title Close to Home has been chosen to reflect the on the fact that the last two years have been an unprecedented time for all of us. As the pandemic eases and life has slowly started to resume its usual pace, Contemporary Quilt London members have been reflecting on their own experiences. These pieces are their individual responses and reflections on this time when we were all required to stay at home.
A second body of work on display is Crossing the Line. This challenge asked members to use three specific colours and a prescribed size to produce a piece with a distinct diagonal line through it.
Artists have used surface techniques such as printing and dyeing and textile techniques including piecing, applique and surface stitching and quilting either by hand or machine. In contrast to traditional quilters contemporary quilters often use a wide variety of materials in their pieces including linen, paper, velvet, scrim and organza.
