Under the Environment Act 2021, the council has a legal duty to protect and improve biodiversity. This means we must consider wildlife and natural habitats in all areas of our work.
This duty requires the council to:
- consider how council services, policies and decisions can support biodiversity
- protect and enhance wildlife and natural habitats across the borough
- report every five years on the actions we are taking, or have taken, to meet this duty.
To do this, we have produced the Brent Biodiversity Duty Report 2023–2028. The report explains what the council has been doing so far and what we plan to do in the future to conserve, enhance and promote wildlife across Brent.
The report is divided into six main themes. It also includes an introduction, a set of planned actions and key measures to help us monitor progress. This structure reflects the different ways the council can directly and indirectly support biodiversity in an urban area.
