Schools play an important role in Brent’s strategy to become carbon neutral by 2030. Schools are central to developing knowledge and understanding of the climate crisis, developing green skills, and making young people aware of opportunities in green careers.
Schools also have the power to be catalysts for change in the community through involving families in sustainability work and encouraging sustainable behaviours at home. Additionally, schools can take steps to make their sites more sustainable through increasing energy efficiency and biodiversity.
Taking climate action as a school not only makes a positive contribution to the wellbeing of our planet, but brings with it a range of benefits for your whole school community. Already, children across Brent show huge amounts of passion for protecting our environment. View artwork produced by children in Brent showing what climate action means to them.
The DfE’s Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy for Education has also set out a key initiative for all schools to have a nominated sustainability lead and a climate action plan in place by 2025. This guide will support schools with meeting these requirements and making a positive contribution to Brent’s climate action strategy.
