At Kingsbury Green Primary School, sustainability matters because we believe every child has the power to make a positive difference. By caring for our environment, reducing waste, protecting nature and making thoughtful choices every day, we are helping to build a healthier, greener future for our school, our community and the generations to come.
Here’s just a few examples of their initiatives this year:
KGPS Eco Exchange: as part of the Eco Refill programme, pupils launched a monthly shop selling sustainable household products, encouraging families to reuse containers and reduce single-use plastics, while raising over £230 to support future school eco-projects.
Toy Swap Initiative: Kingsbury Green have organised a toy swap for the past 5 years! This year saw families donating 420 books and toys, enabling every child in EYFS, KS1 and Year 3 to take home a free pre-loved item, reducing waste, preventing items from going to landfill and encouraging the value of second hand items. Pupils from all classes showed empathy by recognising that others might benefit from something they no longer need, helping to ensure that every child had the opportunity to take something home.
Earth Day Planting Day: To celebrate Earth Day, our Eco Champions in Years 1–3 transformed the school garden by weeding, preparing planting beds and growing a variety of fruit and vegetables, including potatoes, tomatoes, beetroot, squash, courgettes and strawberries. They also planted colourful marigolds in hanging baskets to brighten the school entrance and encourage a stronger connection with nature. The day helped pupils develop teamwork, responsibility and environmental stewardship while creating new habitats and growing spaces that the whole school community can enjoy.
Sustainable Travel Project: As part of the school's TfL Travel for Life Gold Award work, Eco-Champions carried out a real-world audit of the school car park to help redesign bike and scooter storage facilities. Using observation, mapping and data collection skills, pupils assessed how space is currently used and developed recommendations for expanding sustainable travel infrastructure. The project enabled children to apply their maths and geography learning in a practical context while contributing to plans that encourage cycling, scooting and healthier, greener journeys to school.
