A pot of £610,000 is being used to make streets outside schools greener, safer, and more appealing for pupils attending the schools and local residents.
Works are underway outside six schools, around four roads in Brent. The scheme brought together young people at the schools so they could have their say on what they wanted on their streets. Their suggestions for new plants, rain gardens, and seating were all included in the plans for the areas.
Councillor Krupa Sheth, Cabinet Member for Environment, Infrastructure and Climate Action, said: “This is a great initiative that gives our young people a voice in how their local area looks, helping them to have pride in their surroundings and teaching them important lessons around the environment.
“It is great to see the progress on this project, as more trees and garden spaces should help encourage active travel, so that pupils pick up a scooter, a bike, or walk to school. This will help us as we work towards our ambitious target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.”
