Wembley Stadium given go ahead to host additional non-sporting events

Up to eight additional major non-sporting events can now be hosted at Wembley Stadium every year after Brent Council’s Planning Committee approved proposals from the Football Association (FA) yesterday (11 September).

The nation stadium, which marked its 100th anniversary this year, now has approval to host up to 54 non-sporting events each year.

The stadium was the chosen London venue for Taylor Swift’s international Eras Tour with eight performances. The venue also hosted AC/DC, Green Day and Bruce Springsteen this summer. Fans travelled to Wembley from across the world, with money being spent on accommodation and at local restaurants and businesses.

Councillor Shama Tatler, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Growth and Planning said: “I’d like to thank everyone who sent in their comments regarding Wembley Stadium’s planning application. It’s crucial that the Stadium hears feedback from residents. We are proud that Wembley Stadium remains at the heart of our national story, with a storied history dating back over a century. Today, Wembley Stadium hosts some of the biggest and best artists in the world. This summer, Taylor Swift’s ERAS Tour injected an estimated £300million into London’s economy – a significant boost for local businesses and communities. Being able to hold additional events will help keep the iconic Wembley Stadium firmly on the global stage.”

To mitigate any potential effects that the additional events may bring, the stadium has agreed to fund a number of improvements.
