Brent's biggest climate investment powers £1.8 million upgrade for Church End

A transformational £1.8 million investment is set to deliver a greener, safer and more climate-resilient future for Church End, along Church Path and Longstone Avenue. This forms part of Phase 1 of the Church End Green Corridors Project and the wider Investing in Brent programme, and will be delivered by Spring 2026.

This significant climate-focused funding is a major investment in environmental action and in creating a model green neighbourhood that promotes walking, cycling, green spaces, and cleaner, safer streets.

Funded by the council through the Investing in Brent programme, Phase 1 will overhaul Church Path and Longstone Avenue to upgrade public spaces and create inviting, nature-rich areas shaped directly with local residents.

Major improvements include:

  • Complete resurfacing of Church Path to provide a smoother, safer and more accessible route for walking, wheeling and cycling.
  • New CCTV columns and upgraded lighting helping to deter anti-social behaviour and improve safety, especially at night.
  • Removal of outdated phone boxes and upgraded fencing, including along the Peabody Estate, to enhance security and the look of the area.
  • Rain gardens, new planting, pocket parks and colourful murals, co-designed with residents and schools, bringing nature, biodiversity and community identity to the heart of Church End.
  • New access points, including a connection to Beveridge Road, improving access to parks and other key destinations.
  • New wayfinding signs to help people navigate local routes with ease.
  • On Longstone Avenue, a new zebra crossing near Newfield Primary School, improved access into Willesden New Cemetery, and street greening will create a safer, more welcoming environment.
“

This is one of the most exciting climate-positive neighbourhood projects Brent has ever delivered.

Cllr Jake Rubin, Cabinet Member for Climate Action and Community Power, said:

“This is one of the most exciting climate-positive neighbourhood projects Brent has ever delivered. It is also Brent’s biggest climate investment since declaring a climate and ecological emergency in 2019, with £3.2 million for projects focused on climate action alone.

“Investing £1.8 million into Church End shows our absolute commitment to tackling the climate and ecological emergency head-on. From rain gardens to safer streets and better walking and cycling routes, these improvements will make Church End greener, cleaner and more connected. Residents have helped shape this project from the start, and the result will be a neighbourhood that truly reflects their priorities.”

Residents will be invited to join art workshops and planting days as works progress, helping shape this flagship Green Neighbourhood for years to come.

Phase 2 of the Church End Green Corridors, which will deliver a further £2 million of investment, will progress in 2026 and be delivered by Spring 2027.
