The Brent SHPS Refugee Housing and Integration Service has been named one of the winners of the London Homelessness Awards 2025.

The council service, delivered in partnership with Crisis UK, was recognised for its outstanding work supporting refugees to rebuild their lives in Brent.

Celebrating London-based projects that improve services for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, the prestigious annual awards are sponsored by the London Housing Foundation, London Housing Directors Group, the Mayor of London, Crisis, and Shelter. This year, more than 30 applications were received, with three outstanding projects selected for their exceptional work in preventing and addressing homelessness.

Brent’s SHPS (Single Homeless Prevention Service) works with individuals and couples referred by the council to prevent or relieve homelessness. In recent years, the service has expanded to provide specialist support for refugees who have received a positive decision from the Home Office, helping them move towards independence, stability and full integration into the local community.

Through personalised, face-to-face assessments, the team supports people to find and sustain housing, access employment opportunities, register with GPs and other essential services, and build lasting connections within their communities.

Adopting a person-centred approach, the service tailors support to each individual’s priorities and goals, helping them build the confidence, skills and sense of belonging needed to thrive.

“

We’re incredibly proud that our Refugee Housing and Integration Service has been recognised with this award.

Councillor Fleur Donnelly-Jackson, Cabinet Member for Housing, said:

“We’re incredibly proud that our Refugee Housing and Integration Service has been recognised with this award. It’s a testament to the dedication of our staff, Crisis UK, and everyone who plays a part in helping people facing homelessness to build stable, fulfilling lives here in Brent.

“Whether born here or drawn here, Brent has a long and proud history of welcoming people into our community, and this service plays a vital role in supporting refugees to settle, integrate and thrive.”

Anita Silberbauer, Director of Crisis Skylight Brent, said:

“It’s wonderful to have the Single Homeless Prevention Service recognised through this award. We’re incredibly grateful to the dedication of our staff, partners and Brent Council who are working together to seek to help refugees to rebuild their lives in the UK through our service, including support with accessing housing, training and employment.

“Everyone should have a safe home, regardless of where they were born and we’re proud to continue our work with the council to ensure that people can build their lives away from homelessness for good.”
