Have your say on preventing homelessness and rough sleeping

Residents are invited to share their views and help shape a new draft strategy to prevent homelessness and rough sleeping in Brent over the next five years.

Brent is one of the worst-affected areas in the UK by the housing crisis, and ongoing cost-of-living pressures have left many people struggling to find stable housing and put others at risk of losing their homes.

Every week, around 170 households in Brent approach the council as homeless. Last year the council spent more than £30 million supporting homeless residents, most of it on temporary accommodation.

The draft strategy sets out a clear programme of action focused on understanding homelessness, preventing homelessness, increasing the affordable supply of housing, providing good quality affordable temporary accommodation for short spells and partnership working.

“

Homelessness doesn’t just affect where people live, it impacts every part of their lives, from mental health and wellbeing to the ability to work and the lives of children growing up without a stable home.

Cabinet Member for Housing

Councillor Fleur Donnelly-Jackson, Cabinet Member for Housing, said:

"Everyone deserves a safe, stable home and the support to keep it. Homelessness doesn’t just affect where people live, it impacts every part of their lives, from mental health and wellbeing to the ability to work and the lives of children growing up without a stable home.

“We want to hear from as many people as possible to ensure the final plan reflects the needs of our community and helps prevent homelessness before it starts.”

Residents, local organisations and people with lived experience of homelessness are encouraged to share their views. The consultation is open until 3 November.

Take part in the consultation.
