Turning the Tide on Debt: New Partnership Helping Brent Residents Take Control

Hundreds of residents are getting support to take control of their finances, thanks to a new debt advice partnership that's already transforming lives and lessening money worries in Brent.

Brent Council and Citizens Advice Brent have teamed up to offer tailored advice and practical support for any money worries, from rent and energy bills to debt management.

Unlike traditional debt services, the partnership provides holistic, face-to-face support in local hubs, linking debt advice directly with benefits checks, income maximisation and wider wellbeing services, making it easier for residents to get all the help they need in one place.

Anyone struggling financially can visit one of the eight Brent Hubs across the borough for confidential, face-to-face support in a safe space.

Since launching in January 2025, the service has already supported 432 residents, delivering tangible financial results:

  • £218,648 in extra income achieved through benefits checks, successful claims and back-dated awards
  • £212,069 of debt written off or reduced through negotiations with creditors
  • £271,245 of debt brought under control through repayment plans and budgeting support
“

The weight of money worries can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to know you’re not alone. Support is here to help manage debt, ease the strain and bring real peace of mind.

Cllr Promise Knight, Cabinet Member for Customer Experience, Resident Support and Culture, said: “With living costs still at record highs, many residents are finding it harder than ever to cover everyday essentials, and that pressure can quickly lead to debt.

“The weight of money worries can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to know you’re not alone. Support is here to help manage debt, ease the strain and bring real peace of mind.

“Our partnership with Citizens Advice Brent shows the power of working together. By offering practical, hands-on support, we’re helping people get back on their feet, with hundreds of families across Brent already feeling the difference.”

Raj Kapoor, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Brent, said: “This service is about more than just numbers - it’s about people. By embedding debt advice in local community hubs, we’re making support accessible, local and joined-up. Residents don’t just get advice, they get solutions that fit their lives, helping them move forward with confidence.”

A resident who used the service said: “I was drowning in bills and didn’t know where to turn. The team at my local Hub helped me work out a plan, wrote off some of my debt and showed me how to claim support I didn’t even know I was entitled to. For the first time in years, I feel like I can breathe again.”

Residents who need support with debt can visit their nearest Brent Hub for free, confidential advice.
