A landmark development delivering 155 new affordable council homes officially opened today, marking a major milestone in the transformation of the former Alperton Bus Garage site.
Cabinet Members, ward councillors and project partners gathered to cut the ribbon at Shillibeer House in Ealing Road, celebrating the completion of a development that will provide high-quality, energy-efficient homes for local people.
The new council homes form part of the wider regeneration of the former bus garage, which has been transformed into a mixed-tenure neighbourhood of 461 homes. The scheme is expected to support around 1,200 residents once complete, including households moving into 155 affordable council homes for local people and those in housing need.
Shillibeer House offers a mix of homes for households of all sizes, with 55 one-bedroom flats, 49 two-bedroom flats, 46 three-bedroom flats and five four-bedroom family homes, helping single people, couples and larger families access secure, affordable housing in Alperton.
Already, 103 households have moved into new homes on the site, 96 of whom were previously identified as homeless.
Beyond the new homes, the wider development will create a new residential community with retail space, community facilities, cafés and light industrial “maker spaces” designed to support local enterprise and bring new life to the former industrial site.
The project has also created wider social value through community initiatives, including climate-change programmes with local schools and employment and skills opportunities linked to the development.
The development has been named after George Shillibeer, who pioneered London's first horse-drawn omnibus service, recognising the site's long association with public transport.
