Preston Road and Queensbury Station on track for step-free stations

Brent Council has welcomed Transport for London’s (TfL) decision to begin step‑free access feasibility studies at Preston Road and Queensbury stations. Both stations serve busy local communities and are recognised as important parts of the borough’s transport network.

Improving accessibility across the network is a continuing priority for Brent Council. Step‑free access supports residents who face barriers when travelling and helps ensure that public transport is available to people with a wide range of mobility needs. The feasibility studies announced by TfL represent a further stage in the wider programme to improve access and increase the number of step‑free stations across London.

In addition to Preston Road and Queensbury, TfL will also carry out feasibility work at Brent Cross. This builds on wider progress across the network, including design work at Alperton station, where Brent Council has previously committed up to £5 million towards step-free and other access improvements. The studies will help inform future decisions on whether and how step-free access can be delivered as part of the Mayor’s ambition for 50 per cent of all Tube stations to be step-free by 2030.

“

Accessible transport is not a luxury, it is a basic right, and too many residents have been locked out of opportunities because our network has not worked for everyone.

Cllr Muhammed Butt, Leader of Brent Council, said: “Every new step free station is a step towards a fairer Brent. Accessible transport is not a luxury, it is a basic right, and too many residents have been locked out of opportunities because our network has not worked for everyone.

“That’s why we will keep working with TfL and the Mayor of London to go further and faster on step free access, so every community in Brent can benefit from a transport network that is truly inclusive.”

Alex Williams, Chief Customer and Strategy Officer, Transport for London, said: “Making more Tube stations step-free is a major part of our work to make the transport network more accessible. We have been working at pace to deliver the Mayor’s ambitious target for 50 per cent of the Tube network to be step-free. This work always starts with conducting feasibility studies at stations to assess their suitability, so putting five additional stations under the spotlight is another important step towards this goal.”

Brent Council will continue to work closely with TfL to ensure that the case for further accessibility improvements in the borough remains strong and that residents benefit from a transport system that reflects their needs. While any future delivery will depend on the outcome of the feasibility work and funding, this is a welcome and significant step forward for Brent.
