Self-build and custom house building

Self-build and custom house building

The Self-build and Custom House Building Act 2015 places a duty on us to keep a register of people who are interested in acquiring a self-build or custom build plot in their area.

The register helps us monitor demand for custom and self-build plots in Brent, where people would like their plot to be and the type of house they would like to build.

Registration does not guarantee a suitable plot will be found or become available.

To register you must be:

  • aged 18 or older
  • a British Citizen, a national of another country within the European Economic Area, or of Switzerland
  • seeking (either alone or with others) to acquire a serviced plot of land in Brent to build a house to occupy as your sole or main residence.

If you would like to register your interest for a custom or self-build plot, please complete the online registration form.

Your application will be assessed and we will notify you of the outcome in writing, within 28 days of receipt.

Register to join the self and custom-build register

If you no longer wish to be on the register, you can be removed by emailing the planning policy team: planningstrategy@brent.gov.uk

Self-build

Self-build are development projects where you directly organise the design and construction of your own home. This covers a wide range of projects from a traditional DIY self-build home, to projects where you employ someone to build your home for you. Community-led projects can also be defined as self-build.

Custom house building

This is usually when you work with a developer as an individual or a group to help deliver your own home. The developer may help to find a plot, manage the construction and arrange the finance. This is more of a hands-off approach, but your home will be tailored to match your individual requirements.
