Self build and custom build register
The Self Build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 places a duty on councils to keep a register of people and community groups who are interested in self build or custom build projects in their area.
We have a duty to have regard of the entries in the register as we carry out our planning, housing, land disposal and regeneration functions.
To be eligible for entry on the register you must be:
- over 18
- a British Citizen, a national of another country within the European Economic Area, or of Switzerland
- seeking (either alone or with others) to acquire a serviced plot of land in Brent to build a house to occupy as your sole or main residence.
If you would like to register your interest for a custom or self build plot, please complete the online registration form linked below.
Your application will be assessed against the criteria above, and you will be notified in writing of the outcome within 28 days of receipt.
By signing up, you will help us find out more about the demand for custom and self build plots in Brent, where people would like their plot to be and the type of house that they would like to build. Registration does not however guarantee that a suitable plot will be identified, or become available.
Should your circumstances change and you no longer wish to be on the register, you can be removed from the register by emailing the Planning Policy Team at email@example.com
View a list of permissions for small sites (as of January 2020) which may be suitable for self and custom housebuilders.
What is self build? What is custom build?
Self build projects are defined as those where someone directly organises the design and construction of their own home.
This covers a wide range of projects including a traditional DIY self build home to projects where the self builder employs someone to build their home for them. Community-led projects can also be defined as self build.
Custom build homes are where you work with a developer as an individual or a group to help deliver your own home. The developer may help to find a plot, manage the construction and arrange the finance for your new home.
This is more of a hands-off approach but your home will be tailored to match your individual requirements.

Please note we are required to publish a summary of the information provided in our Annual Monitoring report.
The name of lead contact and/or organisation, number of serviced plots sought, preferences in relation to plot size and type of housing intended to be built will be made publicly available.
