The Brent Social Progress Index (SPI) is an interactive data tool that measures how Brent’s 22 wards are performing across a wide range of social outcomes. It focuses on what life is like for Brent’s communities, covering areas such as, health, housing, safety, education, access to services and opportunity.

The SPI provides a detailed and shared understanding of the borough, helping the council and partners to become an insight-led borough that better understands its communities and takes data-informed decisions.

Using the SPI

Selecting any indicator tab in the scorecard will open the relevant map in our Borough Data Explorer. Use the tabs along the top to switch features.

How to use the SPI tool

1. Start in full screen

To view the SPI tool in full screen, visit The London Borough of Brent Social Progress Index page or click the full screen icon at the bottom right of the page for the best view. Press ESC to exit.

2. Explore the tabs

Use the 9 tabs at the top to explore different parts of the SPI, starting with the Introduction followed by:
- SPI Framework: Explains how SPI measures outcomes in 22 wards using three key dimensions - basic human needs, foundations of wellbeing and opportunity. Each dimension is made up of four components. For each component, the question informs the indicators selected for inclusion.
- SPI & Economic Development: Explores the relationship between a ward’s SPI score and economic factors.
- Social Progress in Brent: Interactive tools to compare wards across all SPI dimensions and components.
- Basic Human Needs: Looks at essentials like safety, shelter, and health and where urgent support may be needed.
- Foundations of Wellbeing: Assesses whether wards have the right conditions and support to maintain long-term health and stability. It highlights areas where residents may face systemic challenges to their wellbeing.
- Opportunity: Assesses if people have the freedom and support to improve their lives. It highlights where progress is blocked and where investment could have the greatest impact.
- SPI Over Time: View trends from 2022–2024 for all SPI indicators using graphs.
- Scorecard: Detailed view of a single ward’s SPI scores across all levels.

3. Compare wards

Use the Social Progress in Brent tab to compare wards using a heat map or radar chart. Hover or click to see scores.

4. View by dimension

The Basic Human Needs, Foundations of Wellbeing, and Opportunity tabs show detailed scores for each ward. Use the dropdowns to choose what to view.

5. Check trends

The SPI Over Time tab shows how scores have changed from 2022 to 2024. Choose line or scatter graphs.

6. See full ward details

The Scorecard tab gives a full breakdown of one ward’s scores, including economic and demographic info.
