The Mayor will be supporting the Brent Irish Advisory Service (BIAS) during their year in office.
The Brent Irish Advisory Service (BIAS) is honoured to be the nominated charity of the Mayor of Brent Cllr Ryan Hack and looks forward to working with the Mayor over the next year, highlighting the needs of an often “forgotten Irish community” and their role in the wider Brent community.
BIAS has supported England’s largest Irish Community in Brent for over 45 years. The Irish community were one of the first immigrant communities to arrive to these shores to help rebuild post-WW2. Many men headed straight into construction and Irish women worked as nurses or in factories such as McVitie’s.
The needs of the Irish community have changed over decades. BIAS has adapted to meet its changing needs, and helps address and improve health inequalities in our community through the provision of three core services:
- Welfare advice and housing support to over 500 people each year to access entitlements and support helping to maintain independence.
- Our active ageing clubs promote positive aging with music, dance and bingo sessions.
- Our volunteer services help support the charity with “Be a Friend” weekly calls, support in delivering our clubs and helping the isolated and vulnerable.
