Opening up the digital world for every Brent resident

A digital revolution is quietly taking place in Brent as the council accelerates its digital inclusion drive to make sure no resident is locked out of online life.

Brent Council has made digital inclusion a priority, reducing barriers to technology, building skills and ensuring residents can confidently access online services which are quicker, easier and more convenient for residents.

Extending the reach of digital inclusion

Since 2021, the council has distributed over 4,500 devices, including 1,700 high spec laptops for schools, foster carers and care leavers. Around half of Brent’s schools have benefited, and the council has added SIM cards and broadband support to keep households connected. With the support of more than 200 digital champions across libraries, Brent Hubs, AgeUK, health partners and residents have used this kit to access education, apply for jobs, manage finances and use online public services. Over 50,000 residents have also completed digital learning through Springboard, Brent’s online skills platform, including courses such as coding, this builds skills and is increasing access to higher paid work.

The borough is also backing its homegrown talent, creating ten digital and data apprenticeships. Three apprentices have already secured permanent roles at the council, a successful drive to build a locally rooted digital workforce.

Small businesses haven’t been left out either, with over 100 local firms receiving devices, training and connectivity support through the Digital Support Fund so they can reach new online customers.

The council has modernised the borough’s digital infrastructure by expanding broadband coverage, launching user-friendly platforms such as MyAccount and FixMyStreet, and shifted from time consuming paper-based processes to accessible online forms. Moving the council website to a modern, accessible platform has improved the experience for residents who rely on digital channels to interact with services.

Making it easier to stay connected, support is available

To ensure the most vulnerable aren’t excluded, the council launched the Digital Resident Support Fund, offering eligible households a device and a year of free full‑fibre broadband. Working with local fibre companies, Brent has also introduced a £5‑a‑month social tariff to help residents stay connected long‑term. Those experiencing homelessness are being supported with mobile devices and a full year of data so they can keep in touch as their accommodation changes, with training delivered through the LearnMyWay platform.
