Diabetes Peer Support Programme

Eileen Yarde, 87, lives in Wembley and recently competed an 8-week diabetes peer support programme at Chalkhill Community Centre.

The programme provides education, advice and support to residents in Brent who are pre-diabetic, diabetic or related to someone with diabetes.
Eileen, who has lived in Brent for 64 years, explained, “At first, I didn’t know anything about diabetes or how to look after myself.

“At the group we discuss the importance of exercise and how to make our diet more diabetic-friendly. After what I have learned, I have cut out the sugar from my tea and feel more empowered and confident to manage my diabetes.

“I love the group because we come together and support each other. I am learning all the time by listening to other people’s experiences.
“The staff are fantastic. The classes are very interactive, teach you the right things and when people are talking they don’t rush you and they listen.”
