On a vibrant evening in Brent, over 250 attendees came together to celebrate the achievements of young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) at the biannual SEND Celebration. Launched in 2023, the event shines a spotlight on the talents and progress of SEND students as they transition from school to adulthood, an often-overlooked journey that deserves recognition. This year’s theme focused on celebrating Brent-based young people aged 14 and above, whose accomplishments often go unrecognised. The evening brought together students, families, and educators to honour the milestones these young individuals reach on their path to independent living.
Centred around four key themes, Activities, Life at Home, Life in School, and Work Experience, the event featured performances and presentations that highlighted the unique experiences and growth of SEND students. Seven schools participated, each contributing in meaningful ways.
The celebration opened with a powerful performance by Manor School’s choir, featuring over 20 students and incorporating Makaton to set an inclusive tone. Poetry readings followed, including a moving piece on obsessive-compulsive disorder by a student from Edith Kay School that deeply resonated with the audience.
Students from Woodfield School shared their journeys through speeches, music, and a vibrant video production, supported by a music producer and YouTube. Their work showcased the creativity and resilience of SEND youth. The Village School and Seva Education also contributed powerful poetry.
