The College of North West London’s Supported Learning team offers courses and educational progression routes for people with learning difficulties and disabilities aged 16 and above. The college’s main focus is supporting students to develop skills that will enable them to live independently and seek job opportunities. Programmes are specially planned to allow them to learn through practical daily living activities in the college and local community.
Purpose-designed facilities include:
- A specially adapted and fully fitted kitchen and utility room
- A garden
- IT classrooms
- Art and craft room
- Accessible toilets and hygiene facilities
Students are taught in small class sizes and have a dedicated learning support assistant, access to careers advice and opportunities to take part in social enterprise/work experience with business and in the local community. Courses and progression routes are taught for 16.5 hours per week over 36 weeks and every student follows an Individual Learning Plan (ILP). Following successful completion at every level, students have the opportunity to progress onto the next one or seek supported employment or other training.
The college also offers a supported internship programme for 16 to 24 year-olds with a recognised learning difficulty and/or disability who have a learning difficulty assessment (LDA) or an education, health and care plan (EHC) plan. Supported internships are designed to develop transferable skills, knowledge and attitudes in readiness for paid employment. They are based almost entirely at an employer’s location five days per week throughout the college year. Students get real-life experience dealing with colleagues and customers in the workplace, whilst being supported and trained by the college.
