A £1.5million investment was agreed by Brent's Cabinet today which will see one hundred new bike hangars built, alongside a glow-up for older existing cycle parking spaces.

With residents having put in over 1,200 requests for bike hangar spaces, this investment responds directly to local demand and supports Brent’s ambition to create safer, more accessible neighbourhoods.

Councillor Krupa Sheth, Lead Member for Public Realm and Enforcement said: “We meant it when we said we are investing heavily to make Brent safer and greener. Many residents asked us for more secure parking for their bicycles, and we are delivering.

“This major upgrade is part of our ongoing Investing in Brent campaign, delivering improvements that you can see and feel in your everyday lives.

Funded by £650,000 from the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy (NCIL) and additional contributions from Transport for London and developers, the new programme will deliver at least 70 installations in high-demand locations and replace 30 ageing hangars. This will bring the total number available to residents in the borough to over 250 in 2026, with even more planned in the future. Residents living within 50 metres of proposed sites will be consulted, ensuring local voices shape the rollout.

Bike hangars provide secure, lockable parking for six bicycles in the space of a single car, helping to deter theft and anti-social behaviour while encouraging active travel. The annual rental charge is capped at £50 per space, keeping cycling affordable for all.

This initiative supports Brent’s wider goals for a healthy, sustainable environment, cleaner and safer streets, and stronger communities. By expanding secure cycle parking, the council is helping residents choose greener travel options, reduce car usage and transport costs, not to mention health and well-being with improved air quality with more residents choosing active travel. The council has already seen big improvements in this area from other projects, with data from the School Streets programme suggesting a 23% reduction in harmful Nitrous Oxide particles.
