Celebrate VE Day with a street party

Close your street for FREE, bring your friends, family and neighbours together, and celebrate VE Day.

This May marks 80 years since the whole country came together to celebrate in their streets, parks and public spaces to mark peace in Europe. 

The council is encouraging residents to host street parties or Big Lunches on Victory in Europe (VE) Day and is waiving the normal fees for road closures on that day. Residents should apply for their street closure soon as this must be completed by Monday, 31 March.

Councillor Muhammed Butt, Leader of Brent Council, said: “It’s 80 years since our troops returned home after defeating fascism in Europe. This generation made the ultimate sacrifice so that we could enjoy a lasting peace; something that in today’s world feels all the more at stake.

“It’s more important than ever that we take every opportunity to come together, to remember the price of peace and celebrate the unity we enjoy in our communities today.

“The street parties are one way we can do this, which is why we will be waiving all fees that would usually need to be paid for a street party this VE Day, to ensure as many parties as possible can go ahead.”

To make the celebration even more special, the bank holiday on Monday 5 May has been officially dedicated to community celebrations, and VE day itself is on Thursday, 8 May.
