Concerning social media trend: A message from the Leader of Brent Council

Following the spread of a concerning social media trend, the Leader of Brent Council has made a statement.

Councillor Muhammed Butt, Brent Council Leader, said: “We are aware of the concerning social media trend encouraging young people in London to approach or film confrontations involving other pupils. While there is currently no evidence of any organised incidents taking place locally, Brent Council will continue to work closely with the Police and local schools so that families feel supported and informed.

“As a parent, I know how concerning it can be to see these kinds of reports, and how quickly rumours can spread. That is why we are sharing clear advice with families."

“We are asking parents and carers to speak to their children about what they are seeing and sharing, remind them to stay safe and avoid harmful or confrontational content, not to attend, film or share incidents, and to speak to a trusted adult straight away if anything worries them or they receive messages encouraging this behaviour.

“Although this appears to be an online-only issue at present, the police are taking it seriously and have put additional patrols in place around local schools today (27 Feb) as a precaution. We will continue to monitor the situation.

“Thank you to all parents, carers, school staff and partners for helping us keep our young people safe.”
