When icy weather or snow is forecast, we grit roads in a priority order to keep the most important roads clear for you, emergency vehicles and public transport.
In ice and snow conditions, we advise that driving is kept to a minimum and people only venture out if strictly necessary.
We will always pre-treat the roads on our red and orange routes as a precaution if the weather forecast warns us. Other roads will then be treated if the weather gets worse.
We prioritise our red and orange gritting routes first.
Depending on how bad the weather is, after the priority roads are gritted we will then treat many of Brent's heavily used public areas around town centres, transport hubs such as outside train and tube stations, police stations and outside Northwick Park Hospital. We do not grit school playgrounds as this is the responsibility of the school.

During the winter we monitor road conditions and weather forecasts around the clock. Our aim is to treat the main roads and other important routes before the ice or snow comes.
We have a unique forecast for Brent that is updated at least twice a day. This gives the forecast for the next 24 hours and another for the next five days.
The placing of rock salt on the road lowers the freezing temperature of water, slows ice formation, and can help to melt snow. However the snow needs to be mixed with the grit for it to work. This is done by the traffic movement along the roads. Most of Brent’s salting of roads is carried out at night.
Salt is not effective at road surface temperatures below minus seven degrees.
Clearing snow and ice from the pavement outside your home or public spaces can help prevent slips and falls. The Department of Transport has some helpful advice on how to clear snow and ice.
You can use any of the grit bins located around the borough to grit your road or footways except on private roads. Do not use them for your household private driveways or paths.
