Harlesden High Street Improvements

We will be delivering much needed carriageway reconstruction works within High Street Harlesden between Tavistock Road and the Harlesden Jubilee clock end of the road.

The works are expected to last 22 weeks and during this period works will be carried out in 60m sections under a road closure (30m excavation + 30m traffic management area for delivery / collection of materials and plant operation). During this time, buses will be following a diversion route around the closure, whilst deliveries to local shops and businesses will be provided delivery areas outside the closure at the Tavistock Road end of the High Street.

Works are planned to commence 15 September 2025 and will last for a duration of 22 weeks. The scheme will involve a small amount of night-time works, between the hours of 20:00 and 05:00. Due to the nature of the work, it is likely that there will be higher levels of noise. We will do our best to keep the disruption to a minimum and complete the works as quickly as possible. Works will be shut down during the Christmas holiday period and will restart in early January 2026.

Advance signing to inform of the works will be installed widely in advance of the work.

What will the upgrades involve?

• Digging the full depth of the road’s structure
• Building a new road structure and resurfacing of the road
• The repair of existing drains and installation of new carriageway gullies, so that water is redirected safely

Why are these upgrades required?

Our roads are under increasing pressure from an ever-growing number of vehicles and the increase in weight of vehicles over the years. The road structure was found to be failing and in a state of disrepair, where short-term fixes were no longer appropriate. These upgrades have been planned as part of a long-term investment to protect this key route for years to come.

How long with the upgrades last?

Works are planned to commence from Monday, 15 September 2025 and will be completed mid February 2026

Who has been notified?

The Council has been in contact with local communities, businesses, elected representatives and other stakeholders including Emergency services, TFL and London buses to advise of our plans and to implement the upgrades.

Advance signing to notify of the works has been installed and notification letters distributed to the local community.

Will buses be diverted?

Buses will be operating under a diversion around the closure. For further information or to find out how your bus travel may be affected, please visit the TFL London Buses website.

Can the upgrades be undertaken faster?

Works are being undertaken in the fastest way possible under a closure. There is a balance to be met maintaining access for local shops and businesses, as well as local residents who live within the area. The work will therefore be carried out in sections and night time working will be limited to essential tasks only to minimise disruption

What other methods were considered?

Due to the limited space, a road closure would still be required even if only half the carriageway was reconstructed at a time. Equally, whilst it would be possible to complete larger sections, it would negatively impact local shops and businesses

Will I be able to access the area?

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works, whilst deliveries to local shops and businesses will be provided delivery areas outside the closure at the Tavistock Road end of the High Street. We are liaising with affected residents and town centre management to coordinate

I live within the affected area, where can I park during the upgrades?

A section of parking bays in Tavistock Road will be utilised for deliveries whilst the High Street is closed. Otherwise, there are no changes to the current parking arrangements along the surrounding roads.

Will shops be open as usual?

Shops will stay open throughout the duration of the upgrades. Brent are working closely with local businesses within the area to accommodate their needs to maintain a normal service.

How disruptive will the upgrades be?

Works are being carried out in a busses only section of High Street Harlesden. Disruption to traffic is therefore expected to be limited. Buses will be on diversion, so stops within the closure will also be suspended.
